How to Lead a Team
Once you have heard from everyone on your team, and they’ve all confirmed the launch date you may want to send them a personal note telling them how excited you are about the team they are on, and how much you are looking forward to seeing them on the call (with a reminder of the call date, day, and time).
By now the Enrollment process will have automatically guided them through an Orientation. The Orientation will have instructed them to read the entire INTRODUCTION to the course a week ahead of the meeting and to come prepared to start training on the very first call.
Before your first meeting I recommend that you go to the calendar on your computer and create a ‘recurring appointment’ for the exact day and time of your weekly call. Add a ‘reminder’ so it makes a sound an hour before the session. Open the appointment file and add the following information so it will be available every week when you have your meeting. Then during each meeting you will be able to update it and keep track of the following:
The following form will also keep all the information you need handy for your session:

WEEKLY Session Protocol
ALL weekly sessions require the Team Leader to take the following steps (it is recommended that you keep these notes handy for each session so you can follow them as you lead… ideally you will place this on your weekly recurring calendar along with the above listed items):
1. Get on the call 1 or 2 minutes early (try to always be the first one on the call as it sets an example for the others to be prompt, and it demonstrates your commitment to them)
2. Have rollcall within the first two or so minutes.
3. If people are missing, find out who their Team Partner was, and ask the Team Partner if they had said whether or not they would be on the call. If they had said ‘yes, they would be on the call’, ask the Team Partner to excuse themselves for a moment and call the person to remind them of the call.
4. As soon as you have 50% of your Participants on the call (or by no later than 5 minutes after the hour), excuse yourself and start the recording (instructions for starting the recording are provided when you apply for your Conference Call number… many systems use *9 to start the recording).
5. After you start the recording, announce the date (such as Nov 24, 2015), the session number for that week (such as Session #1), and the session title (Such as “Support Systems”)
6. Share opening comments or announcements (if you have any).
7. Ask who would like to first share their ‘stories & experiences’ from the past weeks’ Lessons & Assignments (Ask them to include anything they got out of their coaching call with either their Team Partner and / or their Team Leader, and what they got out of the Lessons & Assignments… include challenges and lessons they’ve learned)
8. After they have shared, thank and acknowledge the Participant for sharing, then paraphrase their main points, or summarize the lessons and insights they appear to have gained.
9. Encourage others to comment on what they’ve heard, and if the Participant mentions a challenge they have not yet resolved, ask the team to help them find something ‘great’ about their challenge or obstacle, or to look for ways of using other Lessons they’ve been learning to help address the challenge.
10. Watch the time, making sure everyone has a chance to share. If someone appears to be taking too long to share, gently thank them for sharing, and ask if you can come back to them later in the session (if there is still time) once everyone else has had a chance to share (in order to make sure they all have time to do so).
11. Do your best to encourage everyone on the team to share, but don’t force them.
12. After everyone has share, you then share (you may be the first to share if no one else steps up). Make sure you come to each session with at least 1 great story that clearly demonstrates one or several of the lessons from that weeks’ session.
13. Ask if there are any last thoughts.
14. Ask them to choose a Team Partner for the week.
15. Remind them to call their Team Partner the day before next week’s Team Call, and to find out if they will be on the call.
16. Remind them to read their next Lesson before going to bed that night.
17. Remind them to email their Weekly Goal Guide & Date to you the day before your next week’s 1-on-1 Coaching Call (IF they want to have that call).
18. Thank them for being on the call
SOME sessions require additional steps; just follow the instructions below to stay on track. (It is recommended that you keep these notes handy so you can follow them as you lead):

SOME sessions require additional steps; just follow the instructions below to stay on track. (It is recommended that you keep these notes handy so you can follow them as you lead):
Leading the INTRODUCTION
Your first meeting… INTRODUCTION:
In addition to the steps listed above under ‘Weekly Session Protocol’:
This session should be used primarily to achieve the following:
- Create a kind, loving, non-judgmental, and inspiring atmosphere
- Help the participants feel safe (tell them that we don’t judge them… we support them)
- Create excitement and hopefulness, inspire and motivate
- Tell them in two minutes or less what your own positive experience has been with the course, so they can see the ‘possibilities’ for their own life
- Discuss the importance of sharing, and let them know that you’ve had challenges too (so they can relate to you… and to each other)… but make sure you don’t sound like a ‘victim’ or spend too much time discussing your own past or present challenges… (no more than a minute or two).
- Have Team Participants introduce themselves to each other (ask them to share something about themselves, including the reason why they are taking the training, and what they hope to gain from taking it). Ask them to each start out saying their name each time they speak (just for the first few weeks, until they all learn the sound of each other’s voice)
- Tell them they will team up with each other at the end of each call, and explain how the Team Partner process works… make SURE you tell them NOT to have confrontations with each other during these calls, or to give each other ‘advice, opinions, or coaching’. And tell them not to ‘hold each other accountable’ or ‘call each other out’ during these calls… OUR form of ‘gentle accountability’ is accomplished simply by reaching out and supporting them with love and compassion.
- Tell them that each week we will ask them to share a ‘story’ or ‘experience’ about their past week’s involvement with the Lessons and Assignments, and suggest that throughout the week they look for opportunities that will help them apply the Lessons and Assignments, as well as opportunities to share a story about their experience.
- Ask if any of them have a story to share from the past week involving the Introduction.
- STRONGLY remind them of the importance of reading the next week’s session TODAY so they will have the whole week to apply the insights to their life and complete the assignments, and of the importance of turning in their Goal Guide and Date.
Leading Sessions 1 & 2
In addition to the steps listed further above under ‘Weekly Session Protocol’:
- Remind them each to start out saying their name every time they speak (just for the first few weeks, until they all learn the sound of each other’s voice)
- Remind them of the importance of turning in their Weekly Goal Guide and Date
Leading Session 3
In addition to the steps listed further above under ‘Weekly Session Protocol’:
- Ask them to begin considering members of their Support Community who they believe might be interested in going through the training. Provide reasons for doing this.
Leading Session 4
In addition to the steps listed further above under ‘Weekly Session Protocol’:
- Tell them that in a couple of weeks (beginning with Session 6) you will have each of them take turns leading a session.
- Let them know that you will be there to support them when they lead.
- Tell them that leading a session is actually more fun and interesting than only being a Participant.
- Point out that the Team Leader usually gets the most out of a session, and that this will help them prepare to lead others through the training for those who choose to move on to Life Mastery 2 after completing Life Mastery 1.
- Remind them that ‘leading others’ through the training is not required for certification, however, it is required if they wish to ‘master’ the material or move on to the next level of training… just as in martial arts.
- Remind them to look for members of their Support Community who they believe might be interested in going through the training themselves. Remind them of why.
- Tell them to go to the Members Portal on the website, and download the ‘Weekly Session Protocol’ so they will be able to use it when they take their turn leading.
Leading Session 5
In addition to the steps listed further above under ‘Weekly Session Protocol’:
- Remind them that next week (Session 6) they will begin taking turns leading the training.
- Remind them to go to the Members Portal on the website, and download the ‘Weekly Session Protocol’ if they have not yet done so.
Leading Sessions 6 & 7
In addition to the steps listed further above under ‘Weekly Session Protocol’:
- Ask the Participants to refer to the Weekly Session Protocol you asked them to download. Next, allow a Participant to take over and lead the training (solicit ‘volunteers’). Be very supportive.
- Remind them to look for members of their Support Community who they believe might be interested in going through the training themselves. Remind them of why.
- Remind them that their gains will fade until they’ve been converted into habits… which will only happen if they stay in the process. Encourage them to continue in the process by not only leading a team, but by moving on to Life Mastery 2
- Recommend that they go to the website and read about Life Mastery 2 under the Life Mastery tab
Leading Session 8
In addition to the steps listed further above under ‘Weekly Session Protocol’:
- AFTER you make the announcements below, allow a new Participant to lead the training (solicit ‘volunteers’). Be very supportive.
- Remind them that ‘leading others’ through the training is not required for certification, however, it is required if they wish to ‘master’ the material or move on to the next level of training… (just as in martial arts).
- Remind them that their gains will fade until they’ve been converted into habits… which will only happen if they stay in the process. Once again, encourage them to continue in the process by not only leading a team, but by moving on to Life Mastery 2
- Find out which of them intend to continue to Life Mastery 2
- Find out which of them intend to lead a team after they complete Life Mastery 1
- Ask those who wish to lead a team to decide on which members of their Support Community they believe would be interested in going through the training themselves.
- Ask them to go to the Team Leaders Protocol page for Life Mastery 1, which is a step-by-step guide on how to ENROLL and LEAD a team through Life Mastery. (You are reading this form now). Tell them this page can be found under the Members Portal.
- Tell them they can also find the Life Mastery 2 Enrollment form under the Members Portal, and this is where they will register for Life Mastery 2. Let them know that it is important to register for Life Mastery 2 if they wish to avoid having a significant time lapse between Life Mastery 1 and Life Mastery 2. Point out that it is highly advantageous to maintain their momentum.
Leading Session 9
In addition to the steps listed further above under ‘Weekly Session Protocol’:
- AFTER you make the announcements below, allow a new Participant to lead the training (solicit ‘volunteers’). Be very supportive.
- Make sure they opened the Life Mastery 1 Team Leaders Protocol form & reviewed it.
- Ask those who wish to lead a team for an update as to whether they have forwarded the ‘Invitation’ in the Protocol form and what their experience has been.
- Remind those who wish to join a Life Mastery 2 Team to turn in their enrollment form.
Leading Session 10
In addition to the steps listed further above under ‘Weekly Session Protocol’:
- AFTER you make the announcements below, allow a new Participant to lead the training (solicit ‘volunteers’). Be very supportive.
- Ask those who wish to lead a team for an update regarding the team they are forming.
- Remind those who wish to join a Life Mastery 2 Team to turn in their enrollment form.
Leading Session 11
In addition to the steps listed further above under ‘Weekly Session Protocol’:
- AFTER you make the announcements below, allow a new Participant to lead the training (solicit ‘volunteers’). Be very supportive.
- Ask those who wish to lead a team for an update regarding the team they are forming.

- YOU will lead this last session.
- Ask those who wish to lead a team for an update regarding the team they are forming.
- Remind everyone that this is the last session
- Have everyone open their curriculum and read along with you as you walk them through the requirements for becoming certified, for launching a team of their own, and for joining Life Mastery 2.
- Remind those who wish to join a Life Mastery 2 Team to turn in their enrollment form.
- Thank them for attending the course and encourage them to continue in the process, reminding them that their gains will fade until they’ve been converted into habits… which will only happen if they stay in the process.
